The purpose of this (informal) course is to introduce the audience with the effective deformation and homotopy theories for algebraic structures with the help of operads (and their generalisations). 

 

2. Operads 

 

The rise of homotopy algebras made up of infinite series of structure operations prompts the introduction of a conceptual object which can encode them: this is the notion of an operad. Operads and their algebras form "multilinear representation theory".
