A hundred years ago, Weyl classified irreducible representations for real compact Lie groups in terms of combinatorics. However, the situation for p-adic Lie groups is more complicated, owing to the increased complexity of arithmetic over the p-adic numbers. Sixty years ago, Langlands proposed an analogous classification for p-adic groups in terms of Galois theory. Since then, there has been much work on the local Langlands conjecture. In this talk, we will describe some recent progress, drawing from techniques in algebraic and analytic geometry.
