  classified irreducible representations for real compact Lie groups in ter
 ms of combinatorics. However\, the situation for p-adic Lie groups is more
  complicated\, owing to the increased complexity of arithmetic over the p-
 adic numbers. Sixty years ago\, Langlands proposed an analogous classifica
 tion for p-adic groups in terms of Galois theory. Since then\, there has b
 een much work on the local Langlands conjecture. In this talk\, we will de
 scribe some recent progress\, drawing from techniques in algebraic and ana
