DESCRIPTION:Speakers: Oleksandr Mitsiats (Virginia Commonwealth University
)\n\nAbstract:  \nIn this talk I will describe a class of minimization pr
oblems arising in modelling shape memory alloys.  I will start with a sh
ape memory material illustration\, followed by a simple one dimensional mo
del of it. Its extensions in 2D and 3D will help us understand the energet
ic mechanism behind the formation of twin patterns in physical experiments
. By means of sharp upper and lower bounds\, weshow that certain experimen
tally observed  structures provide optimal energy scaling law\, and - und
er certain assumptions - are true energy minimizers. I will also discuss t
he extension of the linear elastic models for two twins to model multiscal
e patterns\, which appear in recent physical experiments and involve mixin
 g of fourtwins. \n\nhttps://math-events.uni-bonn.de/event/392/
