Virtual fibring for manifolds and Poincaré-duality groups

The talk will revolve around the problem of finding finite-sheeted covers of manifolds that fibre over the circle. I will discuss some of the history of the subject in relation to 3-manifolds, conjectures on the general picture for finite-volume hyperbolic manifolds in odd dimensions, and recent progress on algebraic versions of the problem. Based on joint work with S. Fisher and G. Italiano.
