 alk I will give a basic introduction to inverse problems\, highlighting co
 mmonalities and differences between deterministic and statistical ones\, s
 pecific difficulties\, and important examples. Twomajor topics will be cov
 ered: regularization (i.e. the construction of suitable estimators from no
 isy data) and inference (i.e. statistically rigorous statements about prop
 erties of the unknown quantity of interest based on noisy data). For bot
 h topics\, I will explain a general approach to design and analyze corresp
 onding methods\, and I will also discuss applications e.g. from medical im
