In the last years, the variational study of materials has drawn upon new advancements in important mathematical approaches and techniques.

These include peridynamics, Young measures, discrete-to-continuum analysis, just to name a few. These advanced methods are considered by now fundamental in the Calculus of Variations applied to materials but still constitute a very active field of research. It is therefore very important for graduate students and young researchers to build a solid background, while getting acquainted with current trends in the topic.

The aim of this school is to bring together experts in the field to provide PhD students and early-career researchers with an introduction to the most modern techniques in the variational study of materials. The program will include seminar talks of established young researchers of high profile, who will show how modern variational methods are used in current research. Among mini-courses and research talks there will be time for interesting discussions as well as the opportunity for participants to present their own posters!

The deadline for the application for participation is November 15th, 2025.

Our Global Mobility Fellowships provide participation opportunities for selected researchers and PhD students from countries of the Global South in the Special Topic Schools of the Hausdorff School for Mathematics. For more information, please visit our website.

The University of Bonn and HCM are committed to diversity and equal opportunity. We aim to increase the proportion of women in areas where women are underrepresented and to facilitate their careers. We therefore strongly encourage women with relevant qualifications to apply.

To encourage the participation of young researchers facing increased financial burden, such as researchers from developing countries, a small number of funded places are available. Please indicate in your application for which type of financial support you would like to be considered.
