I will describe how to construct bases for the cyclotomic KLR algebras of affine types A and C, although I will mainly focus on affine type A in level 1. I will explain where these bases come from, including their connections to other work such as the Murphy basis, and the LLT conjecture. The final part of the talk, which is very much work in progress, will introduce a new basis for (some of) these algebras that seems to have much better properties.
