The Junior Trimester Program is primarily addressed to PhD students, postdocs and young (assistant) professors. Applicants are expected to have completed their PhD thesis at most 6 years ago. (The six-year deadline can be extended for researchers with parenting or other caregiving responsibilities.)
If a group of junior scientists wants to apply, then every member is asked to complete the application form below. Please do not forget to indicate the name of group leader and the names of the members. The Letter of Intent should contain a project description of the group and may be identical for all members.
The call for participation will open on July 6, 2026.

Mentors:

Extremal and probabilistic combinatorics is a flourishing mathematical area which has seen several particularly strong breakthroughs in the past few years. This junior trimester program is aimed at early-career researchers in the area who are within six years of their PhD completion date*. Working at the Hausdorff Research Institute for Mathematics for one to three months, the researchers will have the opportunity to collaborate in small groups and to form new connections. The participants of the program will have full flexibility to decide on the research problems they work on, but will also have access to more senior mentors for guidance and advice. In addition to weekly activities such as seminars, reading groups, and open problem sessions, there will also be several workshops and a summer school during the three-month program. These larger events will be centred around recent developments in the field, in particular focusing on the new methods behind some recent breakthrough results. Following the philosophy of Junior Trimester Programs at HIM, the early-career researchers are themselves the driving force behind the organisation of all of the activities of the program, including the selection of external speakers and topics for the workshops and the summer school.

Trimester Program Events
Each week of the Trimester Program includes numerous activities, such as a seminar series, lecture series, reading courses and so on. In addition, there are some major events, three workshops and one summer school. The workshops are aimed at people who are participants in the Trimester Program at that time. It is not possible to apply only for these workshops. There is a separate application platform for the School, which can be found on the School's event page.
