Description
In this talk we are going to investigate dimension-reduced models for the approximation of elastic deformations of thin elastic plates.
After a brief discussion of the derivation of these two-dimensional models from three-dimensional nonlinear elasticity, we concentrate on the numerical approximation of nonlinear bending deformations.
The nature of such problems does not allow for using standard finite element methods.
Deformations of thin elastic plates, like a sheet of paper, become much more flexible, if the plate is allowed to be folded. We are going to study a model for bending deformations with folds, and propose a method for the optimization of folds.
